Importance of NPDs for advancing water sector reforms reconfirmed during the Water Convention in Astana

On 11 October 2018 at the 8th Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention, in Astana, a side event on the National Policy Dialogues under the European Union Water Initiative was organized. The event was opened by the Kazakh Vice-Minister of Agriculture Mr. Yerlan Nyssanbayev, UNECE Executive Secretary Ms. Olga Algayerova, Ms. Astrid Schomaker, Director for Strategy, DG Environment, European Commission and Mr. Seppo Rekolainen, Director, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Finland.

The event brought together around 80 participants and provided an insight on the results and outcomes of the NPDs in Central Asia and the Eastern Partnership countries under the EUWI+ programme, funded by the European Union. Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia and Ukraine shared experiences of the EUWI+ implementation, showcasing concrete activities and outputs under all three components of the programme.

They also highlighted the importance of NPDs for advancing water sector reforms, promoting transboundary cooperation and attaining the SDGs. The discussions continued during a special session on the European Union Water Initiative and National Policy Dialogues at the 8th Session of the Meeting of the Parties, addressing an audience of around 500 delegates from more than 90 countries, where EUWI+ implementing partners presented recent achievements, supported by statements of partner countries of the Initiative.

The Meeting of the Parties thanked the European Commission for its support and leadership in this area of work under the Convention, welcomed the progress in the implementation of the EUWI+, reconfirmed the important role of National Policy Dialogues in fostering the implementation and application of the Convention and its Protocol on Water and Health, the progressive approximation to European Union legislation and the enhancement of transboundary cooperation and highlighted that the cross-sectoral work in the framework of the National Policy Dialogues was extremely useful to support countries in their efforts to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals.
