An important event was held in Moldova, organized by the Agency Apele Moldovei on 18 and 19 of July: The meetings of the Basin Committees on the river districts of the Dniester and the Danube Prut and the Black Sea (BPBS).

It is for the first time, after a three-year break, that the Dniester River District Committee was convened. As to the Danube Prut and the Black Sea (BPBS) River District, the meeting of the Basin Committee (BC) was held for the first time.

The main purpose of these meetings was to bring together the BC members and to inform them about their obligations according the new Water Law and regulations, as well as about the progress of development of the River Basin Management Plans that are currently under approval by the Government.

A draft guideline to managing sub-river basins was submitted to the Basin Committee. This guideline includes recommendations on the procedure for establishment of "small" basin committees at the sub-basin level. It is to be noted that four basin committees on small rivers like Ciuhur, Camenca, Tigechi and Larga have already been established in the Prut Basin. Two new basin committees for the Prut tributaries - Lapushna and Nyrnova - are in process. It was decided to invite the representatives from sub basins for the next BC meeting in October- November.

The BC members were also informed about on-going projects and initiatives. The national representative of the EUWI+East project, invited to the meeting of the BPBS River District meeting, presented the project goals, objectives and expected results.

The Water Agency as one of the main beneficiaries of the project addressed to the EUWI+East project for support in creating and supporting the BPBS River District Committee and initiatives at sub-basin level.
