Objective of the study visit was to demonstrate the practical hydro-chemical implementation of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in Austria related to the accreditation according EN ISO/IEC 17025. Directive No 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000 establishing a framework for community action in the field of water policy (WFD) entered into force on 22 December 2000. It establishes quality objectives and indicates methods how to reach these objectives and how to maintain good water qualities. The focus is on a river-basin-related view, which requires on a basis of status-quo-analysis the preparation of a management plan including regular targeted monitoring in order to reach the water protection and management goals within given deadlines.

The study visit involved the designated partner laboratories in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, in particular laboratory personnel responsible for the implementation of a WFD-compliant water quality monitoring.

Main topics:

- Information about the implementation of WFD in Austria (from sampling to data reporting)

- Practical implementation of the WFD monitoring in Austria

- Field trips and visits of accredited partner laboratories

- Practical implementation of the EN ISO/IEC 17025 requirements in selected laboratories in Austria
